Defending champions Senegal asserted their dominance in Group C of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, securing top spot with a flawless record after defeating Guinea 2-0 in the final group match.
In a well-contested encounter, Senegal’s Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye found the net to seal victory at Stade de Yamoussoukro. Seck’s powerful header from Krepin Diatta’s free-kick broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, while Ndiaye, assisted by Sadio Mane, secured the win in the dying moments.
Senegal, maintaining a perfect record in the group stage, progresses to the knockout stages with confidence. Their performance, marked by a solid defensive display and clinical finishing, showcased their intent to defend the AFCON crown.
The win also solidified Senegal’s reputation as a force in the tournament, having scored eight goals in three matches, only surpassed by Equatorial Guinea. The team’s unbeaten streak now stands at an impressive 10 matches.
With the top spot in Group C secured, Senegal sets sights on the knockout rounds, aiming to become the first side since Egypt in 2010 to successfully defend the AFCON trophy. Guinea, despite the defeat, advances to the next stage as one of the best third-place teams.
Senegal’s next challenge in the last 16 awaits, while Guinea prepares to face Group A winners Equatorial Guinea in a bid to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015.
