Girona began their LaLiga campaign with a resilient 1-1 draw against Real Betis at the Benito Villamarín Stadium on Thursday evening. The match, which marked the start of the 2024-2025 season, saw both teams put on a spirited display, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season.
Real Betis, who will compete in the Europa Conference League this season, took an early lead in the 6th minute. Captain Nabil Fekir delivered a precise corner kick that was met by Marc Bartra, whose powerful header left Girona’s goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga with no chance.
Betis dominated much of the first half, creating several opportunities to extend their lead. However, Gazzaniga was in fine form, making crucial saves to keep Girona in the game.
In the second half, Girona, despite the summer departures of key players like Savinho and Artem Dovbyk, began to find their rhythm. Their persistence paid off in the 72nd minute when 19-year-old Dutch midfielder Gabriel Misehouy, a recent signing from Ajax, scored the equalizer. Misehouy finished off a low cross from fellow substitute Iker Almena, who had made a brilliant run down the right wing.
The final stages of the match were end-to-end, with both teams pushing for a winner. Betis’ striker Chimy Ávila came closest, striking the post with a fierce volley. Despite the late pressure, Girona held on to secure a valuable point.
Earlier in the day, Athletic Bilbao and Getafe also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Athletic’s Oihan Sancet opened the scoring with a long-range effort in the 27th minute, but Getafe’s Nigerian midfielder Chrisantus Uche equalized with a header in the 65th minute.
The LaLiga season continues this weekend, with champions Real Madrid set to face Real Mallorca, while Barcelona takes on Valencia in what will be their new coach Hansi Flick’s first competitive match in charge.
