In the first half, Nico Schlotterbeck’s header was ruled out due to an illegal block by Joshua Kimmich on Andreas Skov Olsen. Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund missed two good chances before halftime. The game’s big controversy occurred when Joachim Andersen thought he had scored for Denmark, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Thomas Delaney.
Shortly after, VAR determined that Andersen had handled the ball while blocking a cross from David Raum, leading to a penalty for Germany. Havertz converted the spot kick, putting Germany ahead. Musiala then secured the win with a well-placed shot after being set up by Schlotterbeck.
Denmark had opportunities to score, but Hojlund’s efforts were denied by Germany’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. Despite the scoreline, Denmark will feel aggrieved by the VAR decisions and their missed chances.
Germany now advances to face either Spain or Georgia in the quarter-finals.
