Elton Jantjies, a member of South Africa’s 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning squad, has been handed a four-year suspension by the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS) for using the banned substance Clenbuterol. The 33-year-old flyhalf, who tested positive for the substance in August, maintained his innocence but did not exercise his right to present his case before an Independent Doping Hearing Panel.
Clenbuterol, known for its fat-burning and stamina-boosting properties, is used by some bodybuilders and asthma sufferers. Jantjies, who expressed shock and sadness at the accusation, had vowed to contest the allegations. However, SAIDS CEO Khalid Galant confirmed the ban, stating that the window for potential appeal had lapsed.
This marks another setback for Jantjies, who faced legal issues in 2022 and was charged with malicious damage to property, though the charges were later dropped. In the same year, he was accused of having an affair, which both he and the implicated party denied. The ban adds to the challenges faced by Jantjies, who previously played for clubs in South Africa, Japan, and most recently, French second-tier side Agen.
