Former Nigerian football star, Finidi George, will lead the Super Eagles as interim coach in their upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali. The Nigeria Football Federation appointed George to manage the team temporarily as they face their West African rivals in Marrakech, Morocco.
George, renowned for his illustrious playing career with clubs like Ajax and Real Betis, will step into the chief coaching role for now, overseeing a squad of 22 players for the international window matches.
The 52-year-old, who scored pivotal goals for Nigeria, including the one securing their first FIFA World Cup finals appearance, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He notably provided assists for legendary striker Rashidi Yekini, contributing to Nigeria’s football history.
This interim position marks a significant moment for George, who has been part of the coaching setup, previously serving as an assistant to former coach José Santos Peseiro. With Nigeria’s coaching position vacant since February, George’s performance in these friendlies could influence his candidacy for the permanent role.
Despite missing key players like Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi due to injuries, George’s coaching debut presents an opportunity to showcase his managerial prowess. His success could bolster his chances for the permanent coaching position, although the final decision will consider various factors.
Nigeria will face Ghana on March 22 and Mali four days later at the Grande Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.
