Celtic endured a crushing 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, as Karim Adeyemi’s first-half hat-trick led the German side to a dominant victory at Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund struck early, with Emre Can converting a penalty in the seventh minute after Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel brought down Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Celtic briefly equalized through Daizen Maeda just two minutes later, but the parity was short-lived.
Adeyemi put Dortmund back in front in the 11th minute and doubled his tally with a powerful strike before netting his third just before halftime, leaving Celtic reeling at 5-1 by the break. Serhou Guirassy added a penalty late in the first half and scored again in the 66th minute, while substitute Felix Nmecha sealed the rout with a seventh goal in the 79th minute.
Despite a promising start to the season, Celtic were outclassed by Dortmund’s relentless attacking play. The loss is among Celtic’s heaviest in European competition, and Brendan Rodgers’ side will need to regroup ahead of their next Champions League match against Atalanta.
Adeyemi’s outstanding performance was the highlight of the night, though he was forced off with an injury early in the second half. Nevertheless, Dortmund’s relentless pressure and clinical finishing left Celtic with little chance to respond.
