Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Libya in their AFCON 2025 qualifier on Friday, thanks to a decisive late goal from substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, was a tense battle, with Libya’s defense frustrating Nigeria’s attack for much of the game.
Despite controlling possession, Nigeria struggled to find the back of the net, missing key chances, including a close-range miss by Samuel Chukwueze and a disallowed goal from Ademola Lookman. Libya’s goalkeeper, Murad Al Wuheesh, made several vital saves, keeping the match level until the final minutes.
It was Dele-Bashiru, brought on as a substitute, who broke the deadlock in the 86th minute. Latching onto a pass from Moses Simon, the Lazio midfielder coolly finished to seal the victory and send the Uyo crowd into celebration.
The win puts Nigeria at the top of Group D with seven points, boosting their qualification hopes for AFCON 2025. They will face Libya again in the return leg on October 15.
