Manchester United has confirmed the appointment of Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director after reaching an agreement with Newcastle United. Both clubs issued a joint statement on Monday, announcing Ashworth’s immediate release from his contract at St James’ Park.
Ashworth, 53, had been on gardening leave since February after expressing his desire to join Manchester United. Following months of negotiations, the clubs agreed on undisclosed compensation terms, allowing Ashworth to start his new role at Old Trafford immediately.
Ashworth’s appointment is part of a series of high-profile hires at Manchester United under the new leadership of owner Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos. The changes include Omar Berrada from Manchester City as the new club chief executive and Jason Wilcox from Southampton as the new academy director.
Ashworth brings a strong track record from his previous roles, including his time as director of development for the English men’s national team and technical director at Brighton. At Newcastle, he was instrumental in securing talents like Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister, Kaoru Mitoma, and Alexander Isak.
With the transfer market open until August 30, Manchester United is linked with several potential signings, including Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt and Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee. The club is also looking to sell players like Jadon Sancho and Casemiro to fund new acquisitions in line with Premier League financial regulations.
