Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday, with Curtis Jones scoring the decisive goal to keep Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table. The 23-year-old midfielder’s close-range finish in the 51st minute restored Liverpool’s lead after Nicolas Jackson had temporarily equalized for Chelsea.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 29th minute, converting a penalty after Jones was fouled by Levi Colwill. Chelsea leveled the match early in the second half when Jackson capitalized on a pass from Moisés Caicedo, beating Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after a VAR review.
However, just minutes later, Jones struck again, connecting with a low cross from Salah to score what proved to be the winner. Despite Chelsea’s late pressure, including a missed header by Renato Veiga in stoppage time, Liverpool held firm to secure their 10th win in 11 matches under new manager Arne Slot.
The victory moves Liverpool to 21 points from eight games, one point ahead of Manchester City, while Chelsea remain in sixth place with 14 points.
This win marks a significant milestone for Slot’s Liverpool, as they navigated their first major test in a tough upcoming schedule, with Arsenal next on the horizon. Chelsea, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from only their second league defeat of the season.
