Colombia booked their place in the Copa America quarterfinals with a dominant 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in Group D on Friday. Goals from Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez, and Jhon Cordoba ensured the win.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a penalty after Costa Rica’s goalkeeper, Patrick Sequeira, fouled Jhon Cordoba in the box. Sanchez added a second goal in the 59th minute, heading in a corner from Jhon Arias. Three minutes later, Cordoba timed his run perfectly to stay onside and finished a long ball from James Rodriguez.
Colombia controlled possession and outshot Costa Rica 14-5, with 62% of the ball. They will face Brazil in their final group match, but their place at the top of Group D is secure. Despite the loss, Costa Rica still has a chance to advance if they win their last match against Paraguay and other results go their way.
Colombia’s win marks their tenth consecutive victory and extends their unbeaten run to 25 matches. They are aiming for their first Copa America title since 2001.
