Cole Palmer has responded to Roy Keane’s glowing comments following his impactful performance in England’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia at Euro 2024. Palmer, who was brought on for Bukayo Saka with 20 minutes remaining, provided a much-needed spark in a match where England struggled to create attacking threats.
Despite the draw, England topped Group C, but the team’s lackluster performance left fans concerned ahead of the knockout stages. Palmer’s lively display, however, offered a glimmer of hope. The Chelsea forward’s unpredictable play down the right-hand side caught the eye, with Keane particularly impressed by his ability to beat defenders and create chances.
“He’s so unpredictable, he can beat a man, go left or right. A lot of brilliant players affect the game, and when he came on, you knew he was going to affect the game,” Keane said on ITV. “Every time he got the ball, you thought something was going to happen. I’m hard to impress, and I’m thinking ‘something is going to happen’. He will think he should be in that starting XI.”
Palmer was pleased to hear Keane’s praise, saying, “It’s always nice to hear, especially coming from someone like Roy Keane who played internationally and at Man United. It’s nice to hear.”
Regarding the possibility of starting in England’s round of 16 match on Sunday, Palmer said, “It’s up to the manager now for what he wants to do.”
Palmer’s performance has given Gareth Southgate something to think about as England prepares for the knockout stages, with fans hopeful that his creativity can help turn around the team’s fortunes.
