Chelsea has initiated talks to sign Villarreal’s 22-year-old goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen, as part of their strategy to enhance their goalkeeping lineup under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Jorgensen, who joined Villarreal in 2019, made 37 appearances last season, recording six clean sheets. The Danish youth international, who has also represented Sweden at multiple youth levels, recently extended his contract with Villarreal until June. Despite this, he is open to joining Chelsea, and discussions between the clubs are underway.
Chelsea is looking to add depth to their goalkeeping options, which currently include Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, Marcus Bettinelli, and Lucas Bergstrom. Kepa Arrizabalaga has returned from a loan spell at Real Madrid, but the club is seeking to transfer him this summer, having already turned down an initial offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
Sanchez, who joined Chelsea from Brighton last summer, initially served as the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper before a knee injury in December sidelined him for much of the season. With his contract nearing its end and training separately from the first team, Chelsea is keen to find a reliable competitor for the position.
Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino, is also considering other goalkeeping talents, such as Leicester’s Mads Hermansen, as part of his efforts to strengthen the squad.
Chelsea will kick off their U.S. pre-season tour with a match against Wrexham on July 25, where fans may get a glimpse of the team’s new direction under Maresca’s leadership.
