Chelsea has started an internal disciplinary procedure following a video posted by Enzo Fernandez on social media, which the French Football Federation (FFF) claims is racist.
The video, streamed live on Instagram, shows Fernandez and his Argentina teammates chanting a derogatory song about the French team after their Copa America victory over Colombia. Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, reposted the video with the caption, “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.”
Fernandez has since apologized, stating, “The song includes highly offensive language, and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.”
Chelsea released a statement condemning all forms of discriminatory behavior and emphasizing their commitment to diversity and inclusion. The club acknowledged Fernandez’s apology and stated they would use this incident as an opportunity to educate. They confirmed the initiation of an internal disciplinary procedure.
FIFA has also begun its investigation into the incident. A spokesperson for FIFA stated, “FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials.”
The FFF has announced plans to file a legal complaint regarding the “racially offensive and discriminatory remarks” made by the Argentina players. FFF President Philippe Diallo has called for a strong response from FIFA and the Argentina Football Association.
Sporting Equals, a sports race equality charity, has also condemned the video, applauding Fofana for publicly addressing the issue and calling for swift and decisive action from Chelsea, the Premier League, the FA, and FIFA.
