WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, have announced the arrival of their first child, a son named Bash, born on July 8. This joyous occasion comes less than two years after Brittney’s release from a Russian penal colony.
Brittney, 33, shared the news during an appearance on CBS Sports’ “We Need To Talk,” expressing the profound impact of meeting her son. “They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window,” she said. “And that’s literally what happens.”
The couple had been openly excited about the pregnancy, frequently sharing updates on social media. Cherelle had posted heartfelt messages counting down the days until they would meet their baby boy.
While overjoyed with her new role as a mother, Brittney is also preparing to represent the U.S. women’s basketball team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite the bittersweet feeling of leaving her newborn for the games, Brittney believes Bash will understand the importance of her commitment. “It kind of sucks because I’ve got to leave, but at the same time, he’ll understand,” she said.
This announcement follows the release of Brittney’s memoir, “Coming Home,” which details her harrowing 10-month detention in a Russian penal colony. Arrested in February 2022 for possession of 0.7 grams of medicinal marijuana oil, Brittney was sentenced to nine years in prison. She was released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap negotiated by the Biden administration.
Since her return, Brittney has made a remarkable comeback in basketball. In her first game back in the WNBA in 2023, she scored a team-high 18 points for the Phoenix Mercury. This year, she is set to compete again for the U.S. national team, aiming for her third Olympic gold medal after victories in 2016 and 2021.
The couple, who celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary last month, are thrilled to embark on this new chapter as parents. Brittney affectionately plans to be called “Pops” by Bash, and she is already enamored with her new role, filling her phone with pictures of her son.
The Griners’ journey, marked by resilience and love, continues to inspire many as they celebrate the arrival of their newest family member.
