Bristol City head coach Liam Manning has taken a leave of absence following the tragic death of his newborn son, Theo John Manning. The club announced the devastating news in a statement, extending their heartfelt condolences to Manning, his wife Fran, and their older son Isaac.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Liam’s recently born son, Theo,” the club’s statement read. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Liam, Fran, and Isaac during this incredibly difficult time. We ask for privacy for the family as they mourn.”
Assistant coach Chris Hogg will temporarily lead the team while Manning, 39, steps away from his duties. Manning’s return date has not been specified.
Messages of support have poured in from across the football world. Rival club Bristol Rovers expressed their solidarity, stating: “Everyone at Bristol Rovers sends our love and sincerest condolences to Liam and the Manning family at this horrendously sad time.”
Manning, who was appointed head coach of Bristol City in November 2023, has previously held coaching roles at Oxford United, MK Dons, West Ham, and New York City FC.
The football community continues to rally around the Manning family as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
