Nigeria’s hopes for a strong performance in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been dealt a double blow with the news of key players’ injuries. Bayer Leverkusen’s forward, Victor Boniface, and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi are set to miss the tournament.
Victor Boniface, the 23-year-old striker in top form for Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen, has succumbed to a groin injury during training, sidelining him for up to six weeks. His absence is a significant setback for the Nigerian team, already grappling with the loss of another key midfielder, Ndidi.
Ndidi, who suffered a muscle injury in Leicester City’s match on December 29, had withdrawn from the tournament earlier, leaving a void in the team’s midfield. His spot has been filled by Alhassan Yusuf of Royal Antwerp.
The blow to the Super Eagles intensifies as they lose two crucial players who played pivotal roles in the team’s strategy. Boniface, who had a prolific season with 10 goals in 16 league games, was expected to form a potent partnership with Napoli star Victor Osimhen. Ndidi, a vital force in the midfield, will be dearly missed for his ball-winning abilities and playmaking skills.
The Nigerian Football Federation is now tasked with announcing replacements for the injured duo as the team prepares to face Equatorial Guinea in their opening Group A game on Sunday. Despite these setbacks, the Super Eagles aim to overcome adversity and make a strong bid for their fourth AFCON title.
