Bayer Leverkusen made history by becoming the first team in Bundesliga history to complete an entire season unbeaten. Their 2-1 victory over Augsburg on Saturday extended their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 51 games.
Having already secured the Bundesliga title in April, Leverkusen’s win was sealed with goals from Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich. Boniface capitalized on a mistake by Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek to score in the 12th minute, and Andrich added a second goal in the 27th minute. Augsburg’s Mert Komur scored a stunning goal in the 62nd minute, but Leverkusen held on for the win.
Leverkusen’s remarkable season includes:
- 51 Matches Unbeaten: Spanning Bundesliga, Europa League, and the German Cup.
- 90 Points: The second-highest in Bundesliga history.
- 34 Bundesliga Matches: With only one match where they did not score.
- Top Scorers: Victor Boniface (14), Florian Wirtz (11), and Alex Grimaldo (10).
- Top Assists: Alex Grimaldo (13) and Florian Wirtz (11).
Leverkusen’s success under manager Xabi Alonso also sees them in contention for a treble. They face Atalanta in the Europa League final and Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
In other Bundesliga news, Cologne was relegated after a 4-1 loss to Heidenheim. Union Berlin avoided relegation by beating Freiburg 2-1 with a last-minute goal. Bochum will play a relegation playoff after losing 4-1 to Werder Bremen.
Leverkusen’s dominant season also saw significant contributions from key players like Florian Wirtz, who won the Bundesliga Player of the Month award three times, and Alex Grimaldo, who led the league in assists. Their defensive and offensive prowess ensured they finished the season as both the league’s highest scorers and one of the top defensive teams.
Leverkusen’s achievements this season set new standards and leave a lasting legacy in German football history.
