Barcelona is considering Hansi Flick, former Bayern Munich manager, as a potential replacement for Xavi Hernández if the club decides to fire Xavi. The final decision will be made after a meeting next week between club president Joan Laporta and Xavi.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and football coordinator Bojan recently went to London, possibly to meet Flick and his agent. Other candidates for the job include Rafael Márquez, manager of Barcelona’s second team, Thomas Tuchel, and Roberto De Zerbi.
Flick is highly respected in Germany. He helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup as an assistant coach and led Bayern Munich to several major titles. Flick was considered for the Barcelona job before but chose to coach Germany’s national team instead. He was let go from that job in September 2023 after some poor results.
Xavi’s job at Barcelona has been uncertain, especially after he mentioned the club’s financial issues compared to Real Madrid, which reportedly upset Laporta. Despite this, Xavi and his team have not been officially informed about their job status.
If Xavi is fired, it’s unclear if he will ask for compensation for the remaining year of his contract, which could worsen Barcelona’s financial situation. This financial concern was one reason the club kept him earlier this year.
The meeting between Laporta and Xavi next week will be crucial. If Xavi is dismissed, Hansi Flick is a top choice to replace him, with other candidates also in the running.
