Aston Villa are close to finalizing a £50 million deal to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. Manager Unai Emery is focused on strengthening the squad ahead of Villa’s Champions League campaign, and personal terms with Onana are not expected to be an issue.
Onana has made 72 appearances for Everton since joining from Lille for £30 million in 2022. Last season, he played 37 matches in all competitions. The 22-year-old Belgian international recently participated in Euro 2024, where Belgium was eliminated by France in the last 16.
Everton’s sale of Onana is expected to ensure they retain defender Jarrad Branthwaite, despite interest from Manchester United. Everton had already rejected two offers from United for Branthwaite, the latest being £45 million plus £5 million in add-ons.
Aston Villa have already signed central midfielders Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus and Ross Barkley from Luton Town this summer. Onana’s addition will further bolster their midfield options as they prepare for European competition.
