Arsenal’s sporting director Edu is set to leave the club, a decision that has taken the Gunners by surprise. The Brazilian, integral to Arsenal’s recent resurgence under manager Mikel Arteta, is now expected to join Evangelos Marinakis’ network of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave, with a potential fourth European club in sight.
Edu, who returned from Brazil last week after personal time away, has shared a close bond with Arteta and played a pivotal role in reshaping Arsenal into title contenders. His strategic oversight led to key signings like Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice, as well as high-profile departures such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Özil. Since Edu’s arrival in 2019, Arsenal has invested £867 million in player acquisitions, a budget surpassed only by Chelsea and Manchester United.
Despite recent frustrations in depth-building behind stars like Ødegaard and Saka, Edu’s impending departure is not attributed to internal discord. His influence within Arsenal extended well beyond recruitment, making his exit a major loss for the club. Arsenal, currently fifth in the Premier League after an injury-plagued start to the season, now faces a major restructuring challenge as they bid farewell to one of the key architects of their revival.
