Feyenoord’s Arne Slot has confirmed that he will take over as Liverpool’s head coach next season, replacing Jurgen Klopp. Slot announced his new position during a press conference, stating, “I can confirm that I will be a coach at Liverpool next season.”
Slot, 45, led Feyenoord to their first Dutch title in six years and secured the Dutch Cup in April. He had been approached by several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Chelsea, and Leeds, but chose to sign a new contract with Feyenoord last May, which was supposed to keep him there until 2026. However, he had expressed a desire to advance his career.
Klopp, who has been with Liverpool for nine years, will coach his final game against Wolves this Sunday. Under his leadership, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020, the FA Cup in 2022, two Carabao Cups, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. Klopp announced his departure in January, citing a lack of energy to continue managing at the highest level.
Slot expressed mixed emotions as he prepared for his final match with Feyenoord, acknowledging the strong support he received from the club. Feyenoord confirmed his departure with a video message on social media, and Liverpool reportedly reached a £9.4 million ($11.8m) compensation agreement with the Dutch club.
Slot is expected to bring his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, to Liverpool. Hulshoff, 49, has worked with Slot at Feyenoord since 2022 and has also served as an assistant for the Netherlands national team.
