Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted his predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode, at the Lagos State House in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday. This marked Ambode’s first official visit to the government house since leaving office in 2019.
The meeting, which was shared on social media by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, focused on the progress and future of Lagos State. According to Akosile, the two leaders engaged in a meaningful discussion about Lagos’ economic growth and its role as a socio-political leader in the region.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu received his predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for a courtesy visit today,” Akosile posted on X. “Their conversation was centered on the continuous development of Lagos, ensuring the state remains a beacon of progress.”
Sanwo-Olu also shared his thoughts on the meeting, expressing his appreciation for Ambode’s perspective and the importance of building on the foundation laid by previous administrations. “Today, I welcomed my brother and predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, back to Lagos House. We discussed the future of Lagos and the importance of building on the solid foundation already in place,” Sanwo-Olu posted.
Ambode served as Lagos State Governor from 2015 to 2019 and was the first governor to serve only one term since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. His tenure ended after a contentious primary election in 2018, where he lost to Sanwo-Olu, reportedly due to a rift with President Bola Tinubu, a key figure in Lagos politics.
The meeting between Sanwo-Olu and Ambode is seen as a significant step towards mending their relationship, which has shown signs of improvement over the past year. In June 2023, Sanwo-Olu attended Ambode’s 60th birthday celebration, and earlier this year, Ambode was present at the wedding of Sanwo-Olu’s daughter.
This recent reunion at the Lagos State House reflects a growing sense of unity between the two leaders, signaling a collaborative effort to further the development of Lagos State.
