The Victor Oko-Jumbo-led Rivers State House of Assembly, aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has taken its dispute to the Supreme Court following a recent Appeal Court ruling. The faction, represented by factional Clerk Dr. G. M. Gillis-West, contests the Appeal Court’s decision that the Rivers State High Court lacked jurisdiction in a key case, SUIT NO. PHC/1512/CS/2024.
Oko-Jumbo asserted his position as Speaker, affirming that the seats of Martin Amaewhule and 24 others remain vacant after their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite the Appeal Court’s recent decision favoring Amaewhule’s group, Oko-Jumbo emphasized that they are not recognized as Assembly members.
Meanwhile, in a separate ruling, the Appeal Court overturned the removal of Amaewhule and the 24 others by the Rivers State High Court. The Court of Appeal deemed the ex parte order from the lower court invalid, asserting that only the Federal High Court has jurisdiction over such matters.
The legal battle continues as both factions await further decisions from higher courts, highlighting ongoing political tensions within the Rivers State Assembly.
