A video circulating on social media appears to show Nigerian House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, who represents Abia State, verbally and physically assaulting a Bolt driver at his residence in Abuja. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for accountability and an investigation.
In the video, Ikwechegh allegedly berates and slaps the driver, who had arrived to deliver a package. The driver reportedly asked Ikwechegh to come to his car to retrieve the package, prompting a heated confrontation. In the video, Ikwechegh is heard repeatedly insulting the driver, calling him “very stupid” and making alarming threats, including, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing would happen.”
The driver, visibly distressed, requested his payment for the service, stating, “I did a job for you, and you have to pay me.” In response, Ikwechegh allegedly refused, saying, “You will not see any penny from me with this level of disrespect.”
As the confrontation escalated, the video captured Ikwechegh slapping the driver multiple times, shredding his shirt, and confiscating his phone. The driver then attempted to record the incident and called on members of the Abuja Taxi Workers Association to come to his aid.
The video has triggered intense backlash across social media platforms, with viewers accusing Ikwechegh of abuse of power and calling for his suspension from public office. Human rights advocates have also demanded an investigation, underscoring the need for accountability and respect for service providers.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has since announced that they are reviewing the incident, stating that any confirmed misconduct by a public official would be addressed according to the law.
