Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), secured the Labour Party’s governorship ticket in Edo State after winning the party’s primary election. The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, declared Akpata the winner with 316 votes.
This marks Akpata’s first active involvement in politics, having joined the Labour Party in August the previous year. Expressing his gratitude, Akpata acknowledged the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, emphasizing the people-centric nature of the LP.
He thanked his supporters and party members for their backing and pledged to work for the betterment of Edo if elected in the September 2024 general election. Akpata also paid tribute to former Ondo State Governor and NBA President, Rotimi Akeredolu, during the LP primary election, coinciding with Akeredolu’s burial.
