Former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, has been appointed chair of a newly formed 29-member caretaker committee for the Labour Party. The committee, tasked with managing the party’s affairs for the next 90 days, will oversee leadership elections and ensure the smooth conduct of congresses at all levels.
This decision was made during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) and extended stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, where leaders gathered to address internal challenges. Senator Darlington Nwokocha was named as the committee’s secretary.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who hosted the meeting, emphasized the importance of resolving leadership issues and ensuring the party’s stability, especially following the expiration of the previous National Working Committee’s tenure in June 2024. Otti called for unity, urging members to support the caretaker committee in its mission to rebuild the party.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stressed that the focus was not on suspending individuals but on ensuring the party’s survival and growth. He encouraged reconciliation and called for members involved in legal disputes against the party to withdraw their cases for the greater good.
Senator Usman, speaking on behalf of the caretaker committee, assured stakeholders that the team would work hard to meet expectations and conduct elections according to the party’s constitution. The committee includes representatives from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), former governors, and members of state and national assemblies.
The formation of the caretaker committee is seen as a crucial step in addressing internal conflicts and guiding the party towards a stronger and more unified future.
