The Supreme Court has upheld the victory of Sheriff Oborevwori from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the rightful Governor of Delta State following the gubernatorial elections held on March 18.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oborevwori, the former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, the winner with 360,234 votes. His closest contender, Ovie Omo-Agege from the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 240,229 votes.
Previously, both the tribunal and the Appeal Court had rejected petitions against the election outcome.
Justice Inyang John Okoro JSC, at the Supreme Court, supported the decisions of the lower courts, asserting that the APC’s and Omo-Agege’s appeal lacked merit. The court ruled that they failed to substantiate their claims of over-voting and noncompliance with electoral laws.
The Supreme Court, on similar grounds, dismissed the appeal brought by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Kenneth Gbagi.
