Former First Lady Melania Trump announced the passing of her mother, Amalija Knavs, on Tuesday. Melania expressed deep sadness on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija. Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity.”
Amalija Knavs, 78, was devoted to her family, including her husband Viktor, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. Melania Trump emphasized the immeasurable loss and pledged to continue honoring and loving her mother’s legacy. The cause of Amalija Knavs’ death was not disclosed in the announcement.
Born in Slovenia in 1945, Amalija Knavs witnessed the transition from Communist rule. Her daughter, Melanija Knavs, later known as Melania Trump, was born in 1970. Melania pursued education in Slovenia, eventually adopting the name Melania Knauss during her modeling career. She married real estate mogul Donald Trump in 2005, and their son Barron was born in 2006.
Amalija and Viktor Knavs became U.S. citizens in 2018, a process facilitated by family-based immigration, during Donald Trump’s presidency. In recent years, the couple resided at Mar-a-Lago.
Donald Trump expressed grief on his Truth Social platform, stating, “This is a very sad night for the entire Trump family!!! Melania’s great and beautiful mother, Amalija, has just gone to a beautiful place in the sky. She was an incredible woman and will be missed far beyond words!” The Trump family mourns the loss of Amalija Knavs, remembering her as a remarkable and dignified woman.
