Tinubu Orders Sharp Cutback on Nigeria’s UN Delegation to Curb Costs

President Bola Tinubu has directed a significant reduction in the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This measure is aimed at cutting government expenses and ensuring that only essential personnel attend the international event.

The directive was announced by Femi Gbajabiamila, Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, during a one-day retreat for heads of government agencies in Abuja. The retreat, themed “Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Effective Delivery,” focused on enhancing the efficiency and coordination of government operations.

Gbajabiamila emphasized that only officials with direct responsibilities at the UNGA will be permitted to attend. “If you have no official business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America. This is a clear directive from the President,” he stated, stressing the importance of prudent resource management.

This decision follows public calls for a reduction in the cost of governance, with many Nigerians watching closely to see if the country would send a large delegation as in previous years. Gbajabiamila assured that this time, strict measures would be enforced to prevent unnecessary expenditures.

The retreat also served as a platform to reinforce the need for government agencies to operate within the bounds of existing laws, regulations, and presidential directives. Gbajabiamila hinted at forthcoming policies aimed at further improving government efficiency and service delivery.

The move to streamline Nigeria’s participation in the UNGA aligns with President Tinubu’s broader commitment to responsive and efficient governance, ensuring that the administration meets the expectations of the Nigerian people.
