President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youths to cancel their planned nationwide protests, assuring them that he is actively working to address their concerns. The protests, scheduled for August 1 to 10, are intended to hold because of the impact of food scarcity and the increasing cost of living.
In a statement on Tuesday, President Tinubu asked the youths to be patient, stating that the government is taking steps to respond to their grievances. He pledged that his administration would promptly address the issues raised by the protesters.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the President’s message during a briefing at the State House in Abuja. “Mr President listens to the young people and takes their concerns seriously. He is working diligently to ensure a better future for the country,” Idris said.
The Minister highlighted several interventions by the Tinubu administration aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians. These include the recently passed minimum wage increase to N70,000, the distribution of rice to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and the launch of the Student Loans Fund.
“A lot is happening. Just today, the National Assembly expeditiously passed the National Minimum Wage Bill, which was transmitted only yesterday,” Idris noted. “The President is working tirelessly to implement various measures for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
Idris also announced that the government would soon introduce a scheme to support all unemployed graduates nationwide, emphasizing President Tinubu’s commitment to an inclusive government.
“The Federal Government is ensuring that interventions reach the intended beneficiaries directly, without middlemen,” he added. “The President is passionate about education and has launched the Student Loans Board to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent anyone from attending school.”
President Tinubu urged the youths to trust in the government’s plans and give his administration time to implement these measures. “There is no need for strikes,” Idris concluded. “The President is committed to delivering on his promises and ensuring a better future for all Nigerians.”
According to him: “There is also the intervention the President is making for young men and women who have finished school and who are yet to get employed post NYSC. For example, there is a scheme the government is perfecting now and that will be pushed very fast so that all those young men and women who have finished school, graduates of universities and polytechnics that are not able to get jobs, they will continue to be supported by the government until such a time that those jobs are offered to them.
“The whole idea is that no one is left behind, everybody will be, it is an all inclusive government and the President is determined to ensure that no one is left behind in this attempt to march Nigeria towards progress”.
