Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was briefly detained upon his arrival at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Sunday. The detention followed a Department of State Services (DSS) directive to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), which seized his passport and held him for several hours.
Sowore, who had returned from the U.S., took to social media to confirm his arrest, citing the government’s ongoing crackdown on dissent. He linked the incident to the forthcoming #FearlessINOctober protests against poor governance, planned for October 1st.
The DSS had placed Sowore on a watchlist due to his vocal criticism of the government and involvement in anti-government movements. He was released after his passport was returned, but the arrest highlights ongoing tensions between the activist and the Nigerian authorities.
Sowore remains defiant, urging citizens to stand against oppression, stating, “We must resist tyranny by all means necessary.” His return to Nigeria had been anticipated, following earlier warnings from the DSS about his involvement in protests aimed at challenging the current administration.
