Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has instructed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) across the state’s 23 local government areas (LGAs) to assume control following the expiration of elected council chairmen’s three-year terms on June 17, 2024. This directive, delivered via a state broadcast in Port Harcourt, aims to uphold constitutional provisions and maintain law and order.
Governor Fubara acknowledged the outgoing chairmen’s service and dedication, commending their commitment to public service. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Rivers State and wished them success in future endeavors.
However, tensions have arisen as some chairmen contested their tenure extension through amendments to local government laws, which a State High Court declared unconstitutional. This legal development led to protests at certain council premises, prompting security measures to prevent unrest.
The political climate in Rivers State has been turbulent, with legislative disputes and defections complicating governance. Efforts to resolve these issues through legal channels are ongoing, highlighting broader tensions over governance and constitutional adherence.
The situation shows ongoing challenges in local government autonomy and governance stability in Nigeria, amidst legal battles and political maneuvering.
