President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede with the new rank of lieutenant general, marking his appointment as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The ceremony, held on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja, included the presence of Defense Minister Badaru Abubakar. Tinubu appointed Oluyede as acting COAS on October 30, pending the return of Taoreed Lagbaja, the substantive COAS, who is currently indisposed.

During the ceremony, President Tinubu praised the military for its unity and effectiveness, attributing recent improvements in national security to the strong synergy among the armed forces. He encouraged Oluyede and other service chiefs to maintain this spirit of cooperation, which he said has brought stability to Nigeria. “The synergy among you has calmed the country, and we need that stability to continue,” Tinubu stated. He assured Nigerians that “better days are ahead,” and pledged ongoing government support to the military in sustaining peace and prosperity.

Lt. Gen. Oluyede expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the vision set by Lt. Gen. Lagbaja for the Nigerian Army. A seasoned officer, Oluyede (N/9318) joined the Nigerian military as a second lieutenant in 1992 through the 39 Regular Course. His service includes participation in the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) mission in Liberia, Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi, and the North East’s counter-insurgency Operation Hadin Kai.

Tinubu emphasized that the government will remain receptive to the military’s insights as it works to navigate the nation through current challenges and toward continued progress.
