The recent shooting of renowned Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, known popularly as Igbo Jah, by an Enugu State police officer has led to widespread protests and public outrage in Enugu. The incident occurred on October 25, 2024, when Igbo Jah, visiting the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad’s headquarters, was reportedly shot by an officer during an “accidental discharge.” The musician was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
This incident, coming on the heels of a previous police shooting along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, has fueled anger in the community. Residents in areas such as Obiagu and Asata have organized protests, setting bonfires and calling for justice, as frustration mounts over recent police-related fatalities.
The Enugu State Police Command responded swiftly by arresting and detaining the officer involved. According to Command spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police of the State CID, to determine the circumstances of the shooting. Uzuegbu assured the public that the officer and any other responsible parties would face disciplinary action in accordance with the law.
Offering condolences to Igbo Jah’s family, friends, and fans, Uzuegbu described the shooting as deeply unfortunate and called on the community to remain calm while investigations proceed. “We are committed to ensuring accountability and justice,” he said, urging cooperation to prevent further escalations and reiterating the Command’s commitment to upholding safety and trust within Enugu.
The incident has underscored growing calls for police reform in Nigeria, with many in the Enugu community demanding measures to prevent similar tragedies.
