Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), appeared at the Intelligence Response Team headquarters in Abuja on Thursday to address allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and treasonable felony. Ajaero, who was summoned by the police last week, arrived at 10:17 a.m., accompanied by prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), activist Deji Adeyanju, and a large group of union members showing solidarity.
The NLC strongly rejected the allegations, viewing them as an attempt to intimidate labour leaders. In response to the summons, the NLC held an emergency meeting and warned of a possible nationwide strike if Ajaero was detained. Union members had earlier gathered at the NLC headquarters, rallying support for their president and condemning the government’s actions.
After a brief meeting with the police, Ajaero was released, stating that the charges were baseless and without evidence. He assured supporters that neither he nor the NLC was involved in any criminal activities. The situation has sparked widespread criticism from labour leaders, opposition figures, and civil society groups, who have called on the police to act with caution and fairness.
