NLC President Joe Ajaero Defers Police Summons on Terrorism Allegations, Sets New Date

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has postponed a scheduled appearance before the Nigeria Police Force, originally set for Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The police had summoned Ajaero to address serious allegations, including terrorism financing, criminal conspiracy, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

In a letter sent to the Inspector General of Police by his legal counsel, Falana and Falana Chambers, Ajaero cited prior commitments as the reason for his inability to attend on the scheduled date. The letter, received by the police on Monday, noted that the summons was delivered too late to accommodate a change in Ajaero’s schedule.

Ajaero has proposed a new date of Wednesday, August 29, 2024, for the interview, expressing his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation. He also requested detailed information about the allegations against him, asserting his rights under the Nigerian Constitution.

The police had indicated that non-compliance with the original summons could result in Ajaero’s arrest, though no further action has been taken at this time. The situation remains unresolved as both parties prepare for the new date.
