The National Judicial Council (NJC) has put forward Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The decision was made during the NJC’s 106th meeting, held on August 15, 2024, and chaired by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination has been submitted to President Bola Tinubu for approval. If confirmed, she will become the second woman in Nigeria’s history to hold the position of CJN, following Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who served from 2012 to 2014.
This recommendation follows Justice Ariwoola’s impending retirement on August 22, 2024, as he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.
In addition to Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination, the NJC has also recommended 27 judges for state high courts and one Kadi for the Sharia Court of Appeal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. These candidates’ appointments will proceed upon approval by the President and the respective state governors.
The newly recommended officials are expected to be sworn in after their appointments are confirmed. Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment would mark a significant milestone in the judiciary, furthering the legacy of women in Nigeria’s highest judicial office.
