Nigerian troops have successfully killed notorious bandit leader Halilu Buzu, responsible for orchestrating violent attacks across Zamfara State. The military confirmed that Buzu, who was a key figure in the region’s bandit network and the superior of infamous terrorist Bello Turji, was killed during a coordinated offensive in Mayanchi village on September 12, 2024.
Buzu had recently called on other bandits to stop targeting civilians and instead focus their attacks on security forces. Despite his appeal, Nigerian troops launched an operation that led to his death, alongside several of his fighters, after they resisted the military’s assault.
In the aftermath of the firefight, soldiers recovered a significant cache of weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 rifles, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The military also destroyed the bandits’ camp and seized motorcycles used by the criminals.
Zamfara State has been a hotspot for banditry, with armed groups terrorizing local communities and engaging in violent confrontations with security forces. The death of Buzu marks a significant victory in the fight against terrorism and banditry in Nigeria’s northwest region.
