The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has launched a bold initiative to combat unemployment by training 90,000 youths and creating over 93,000 jobs by December 2024. This plan is part of President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” mass employment agenda.
The training, which will span three months, aims to equip participants with practical skills in 30 fields, ranging from vocational and agricultural training to entrepreneurial development. According to NDE Director-General Silas Agara, the program will be conducted across all 774 local government areas, selecting 10 participants from each ward nationwide.
Trainees will be introduced to a wide variety of skills, such as poultry farming, crop production, digital marketing, solar energy, and tailoring. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to benefit from the “Start Your Own Business” (SYOB) scheme, designed to provide them with startup capital, tools, and credit facilities to launch small businesses.
In partnership with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the NDE will ensure that beneficiaries receive support throughout the training and resettlement phases. Settlement packages ranging between N150,000 and N200,000 will be provided, and further assistance will be available through access to government-backed loans and equipment.
Agara highlighted that this initiative is designed to empower Nigeria’s youth and reduce unemployment through sustainable job creation. The NDE has also committed to boosting staff morale by relocating to a new headquarters by year’s end, improving its operational environment and efficiency.
