In a tragic case, Stephen Jiya, a young man in Niger State, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the gruesome act of roasting his mother, Comfort Jiya, to death.
The State’s Chief Judge, Justice Halima Abdulmalik, delivered the judgment, finding Stephen guilty of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which carries the death penalty. The charges were brought forth by the Office of the Attorney General of the Niger State Ministry of Justice, following the murder of Comfort Jiya in December 2021.
Comfort Jiya, a retired director in the State Ministry of Education and former Principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse, and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College, Minna, tragically lost her life after being set ablaze by her son on Monday, December 20, 2021.
In her ruling, Justice Abdulmalik stated that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The sentencing reflects the severity of the crime committed by Stephen Jiya.
