The kidnappers of Bassey Daniel, the last remaining victim of a kidnapping incident involving eight National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from Akwa Ibom State, are demanding ₦50 million for his release. The incident occurred in Zamfara State in August 2023, and while the other captives have been freed, Bassey remains in captivity.
In an emotional interview with Vanguard, Bassey’s mother, Mrs. Margaret Daniel, expressed her distress over the ransom demand. She explained that she is a petty trader who sells akara and bread, and raising such a large sum is beyond her means. “I am helpless. When that amount of money was mentioned, I fell sick. I have been asking God why my only son?” she lamented. Bassey’s father died when he was just three years old, and Mrs. Margaret has struggled alone to support him through his education.
Another family member, Mr. Imoh, echoed the family’s plea for help, appreciating the efforts of security agencies and NYSC management in securing the release of the other captives. He stressed the emotional toll on Mrs. Margaret whenever she sees corps members in their uniforms, urging for urgent assistance to free Bassey.
The last female victim of the Zamfara State kidnap incident was released on June 12, 2024, reportedly after her family paid a significant ransom. The exact amount was not disclosed. The family’s hope now rests on the swift intervention of authorities to secure Bassey’s safe return.
The community remains hopeful that Bassey will soon be reunited with his family and urges the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action to address this pressing issue and bring an end to the family’s suffering.
