Kaduna State Police, operating from the Tafa Divisional Headquarters, apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Bello Muhammad, and successfully reclaimed a portion of the ransom he had collected.
According to ASP Mansir Hassan, the state police spokesman, the arrest occurred on January 19, 2024, at Easyway Hotel in Tafa town. Acting on credible information, operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, raided the hotel and arrested 28-year-old Bello Muhammad from Zamfara State. The police recovered an amount of N2,350,000 suspected to be proceeds from kidnapping.
Investigations revealed that Muhammad confessed to being part of a kidnapping gang operating around Kagarko forest in Kaduna. The recovered sum represented his share of a ransom collection. Incriminating pictures of Muhammad brandishing an AK47 rifle in a forest were found on his mobile phone.
In a surprising turn, the suspect attempted to bribe the Divisional Police Officer with N1 million to halt further investigations, but the police officer rejected the bribe. The Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, CP A.D Ali, commended the Tafa Division’s operatives for their swift action and urged them to intensify efforts to reduce crime in the state.
The CP also called on businesses in the hospitality industry, such as hotels, to scrutinize the identities of their customers to prevent criminals from finding refuge in their establishments. The investigation is ongoing, with the suspect providing vital information to assist the police further.
