Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has imposed a 24-hour curfew following violent protests against economic hardships. The curfew, announced in a state broadcast on Thursday night, is in immediate effect to curb further unrest and destruction.
Governor Namadi expressed concern over the protests, which began peacefully but quickly turned violent, leading to widespread looting and vandalism. He emphasized that such actions are contrary to the state’s values and traditions.
“To restore peace and stability, we have implemented a 24-hour curfew across Jigawa State,” Governor Namadi stated. “However, recognizing the importance of Friday prayers, the curfew will be relaxed from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to allow Muslims to attend Juma’a congregational prayers.”
The governor appealed to residents to comply with the curfew and avoid any further acts of violence. He thanked religious leaders and traditional rulers for their efforts in dissuading the public from protesting and urged the community to unite in overcoming these difficult times.
“We were confronted with protests today that do not reflect our culture. Using young boys for vandalism and theft is not a solution to our hardships. Only through collective effort and prayer can we find relief,” Namadi emphasized.
Governor Namadi assured citizens that the curfew will continue until the security situation is thoroughly reassessed. He urged everyone to stay home for their safety and to prevent further damage to public and private properties.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew strictly, ensuring the protection of lives and properties. The governor called on all citizens to remain calm and cooperative as the state government works to restore order and peace.
