The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into allegations that popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and received preferential treatment during his prison sentence.
Bobrisky was convicted in April 2024 by the Federal High Court in Lagos for naira abuse and sentenced to six months in prison. However, a leaked audio recording by social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, suggested that Bobrisky paid N15 million to EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges. The recording also claimed that Bobrisky served his sentence in a private apartment, allegedly arranged through his powerful connections.
At the House hearing on Monday, officials from the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) strongly denied these claims. They stated that Bobrisky served his sentence at Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre, though he was placed in a separate cell due to his physical characteristics. Officials also explained that Bobrisky, as allowed under the law, arranged for his own meals instead of eating the prison’s food.
The allegations surfaced after the audio recording was shared online, prompting the Minister of Interior to suspend two senior correctional officers in Lagos. During the investigation, Bobrisky was notably absent, with his lawyer citing illness but failing to present a medical excuse. His absence sparked tension, with VeryDarkMan initially refusing to testify until Bobrisky appeared. After some heated exchanges, the influencer eventually provided his testimony and evidence to the panel.
Despite the denials from officials, the investigation continues as the House probes claims of corruption and abuse of power. The session was adjourned indefinitely after hearing from both the EFCC and NCoS.
