Chidimma Onwe Adetsina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, has been appointed as the brand ambassador of Enugu State by Governor Peter Mbah. Adetsina, who hails from Amurri in Nkanu West Local Government Area, was honored in a ceremony at the Government House, Enugu, where the governor praised her resilience and achievement on the international stage.
Governor Mbah described Adetsina’s story as one of determination, highlighting her perseverance in the face of challenges. He noted that her journey exemplifies the strength and character that the people of Enugu are known for, especially in the face of adversity. “Chidimma’s success is a reflection of the resilience that defines the people of Enugu,” Mbah said, adding that her new role as a brand ambassador would inspire young people across the state, particularly young women.
The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, pointing out that 33% of the state’s budget is dedicated to education. He assured Adetsina of the state’s full support as she prepares to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant in Mexico, saying, “We are proud to stand by you as you carry our flag on the global stage.”
In her response, Adetsina expressed deep gratitude to Governor Mbah and the people of Enugu for their support. She shared her personal journey, revealing that after facing rejection while competing in Miss South Africa due to her Nigerian heritage, she found acceptance and success back home. “Nigeria picked me up when I was on my knees, and I am forever grateful,” she said.
Adetsina, who is also a 300-level law student, pledged to use her platform to mentor young people and promote education, aligning with the state’s goals for youth development. She added, “I hope my story can inspire many to believe in themselves, no matter the obstacles they face.”
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, expressed confidence that Adetsina would make Enugu and Nigeria proud at the Miss Universe pageant. As preparations continue, Adetsina is set to compete in the global competition in November 2024, carrying with her the hopes and pride of her home state.
