The Federal Government has affirmed that it did not pay any ransom to secure the freedom of the 137 schoolchildren abducted from Kuriga, Kaduna State. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, reiterated this stance after the Federal Executive Council meeting, emphasizing the government’s policy of non-payment of ransom.
Idris highlighted the concerted efforts of security agencies in securing the release of the abducted children, underscoring President Bola Tinubu’s determination to end the cycle of ransom payment to kidnappers. He stated that such payments only embolden criminal elements and are not tolerated by the government.
Regarding criticisms directed at Islamic scholar Sheikh Abubakar Gumi over his comments on bandit activities, Idris emphasized that the government welcomes constructive advice to tackle insecurity. However, he cautioned against reckless remarks that could exacerbate security challenges, affirming that no one is above the law.
The minister also assured the public of the government’s commitment to ending abductions in the country, noting the armed forces’ adoption of new strategies to ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
