A former Enugu police officer, Inspector Joseph Ozonwanji, has been dismissed and charged with murder following the death of well-known Ogene musician, Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah. Nwamba was reportedly killed on October 25, 2024, in an incident involving Inspector Ozonwanji, formerly of the Anti-Cultism Police Squad in Enugu.
According to the Enugu State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, an internal investigation confirmed Ozonwanji’s culpability, leading to his dismissal and subsequent arraignment at the Enugu East Magistrate Court on October 28. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 13 approved the dismissal, with the Chief Magistrate ordering the former officer to be remanded in the Enugu Correctional Custodial Centre. The case file has been sent to the Attorney-General of Enugu State for further prosecution, with the trial set to resume on November 12, 2024.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, expressed deep sympathy for Nwamba’s family and assured the public of the force’s commitment to discipline and justice. “Under my watch, accountability will be upheld,” Uzuegbu stated, reinforcing the police force’s zero-tolerance approach to misconduct.
In response to the tragic incident, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has pledged a full scholarship for Nwamba’s three children and arranged healthcare support for his wife, who is currently unwell. The Governor’s decision highlights the state’s commitment to supporting Nwamba’s family through their loss.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, vowed to pursue the case diligently, emphasizing that justice for Nwamba and his family is a priority. “This case will be prosecuted expeditiously to ensure justice is served,” Udeh affirmed, underscoring the government’s dedication to seeing the matter through.
