The case of alleged electricity theft involving Abuja property developer Cecil Osakwe, brought by the Federal Government, has been adjourned until April 15. The trial, scheduled before Justice Binta Nyako at the Federal High Court, Abuja, did not proceed on Thursday due to the court’s inactivity.
Counsel for both parties agreed on April 15 as the new date for the continuation of the trial. The Federal Government charged Mr. Osakwe with N11 million electricity theft, accusing him of tampering with electricity meters, leading to a loss of N11 million in revenue, constituting an offense under Section 1(10) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
Osakwe was reportedly apprehended by officials of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for allegedly stealing electricity at various properties, including his residence. The defendant challenged the legality of the investigating task force, claiming it was unrecognized by the law. He brought the court’s attention to a pending lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the panel that conducted the investigation.
