Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly launched a late-night raid at the Kogi State Government Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, on September 18, in an attempt to arrest former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello. The operation reportedly involved sporadic gunfire, heightening tensions around the residence.
Bello’s media aide, Ohiare Michael, condemned the raid, describing it as a politically charged move. Earlier that same day, Bello had voluntarily appeared at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja to answer to charges related to an N80.2 billion money laundering case. According to his team, he was allowed to leave without interrogation, only for the anti-graft agency to later attempt his arrest at night.
“The EFCC’s actions tonight were unnecessary and reckless,” Ohiare said. “Bello made himself available for questioning earlier in the day, but they chose not to interrogate him. This sudden, aggressive attempt to arrest him reflects political motives rather than a genuine fight against corruption.”
The former governor has been under investigation by the EFCC for months and was declared wanted in April following a court order. The case, which involves allegations of massive misappropriation of Kogi State funds, has been delayed multiple times, with Bello’s legal team challenging the court’s jurisdiction over the matter.
EFCC officials have not confirmed or denied the raid, but the commission had previously stated that Bello remains wanted, despite his visit to their office. The next court hearing on the case is scheduled for September 25, 2024.
