DSS Releases Journalist Adejuwon Soyinka After Hours of Detention, Seizes Passport

Adejuwon Soyinka

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, a former BBC Pidgin editor and current West African editor for The Conversation Africa, after detaining him for several hours at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Soyinka was arrested early Sunday morning upon returning from the UK. Although the reason for his detention remains unclear, his travel passport was seized by the DSS.

Soyinka’s release came following the intervention of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, which condemned the arrest and called for the immediate return of his passport. The IPI, along with other rights groups like Amnesty International and SERAP, criticized the ongoing crackdown on journalists under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing the arrest as part of a broader pattern of harassment and intimidation against the press.
